Insurance & Payment
Most major insurance plans cover TMS for depression. We handle the pre-authorization process for you.
What's Covered?
Insurance coverage varies by condition. Here is what you can typically expect.
TMS for Depression
Covered by most major insurance plans. TMS has been FDA-cleared for depression since 2008, and the vast majority of insurers now provide coverage after documentation of prior medication trials.
TMS for OCD
TMS is FDA-cleared for OCD (2018). Whether it's covered depends on your specific plan and clinical situation — our care management team and insurance specialists will review your benefits and guide you through your options.
Other Conditions
Coverage for other conditions and protocols depends on your specific plan and situation. Our care management team and insurance specialists will review your benefits and explain your options.

How Pre-Authorization Works
We make the insurance process as simple as possible. Here are the typical steps.
Your Provider Sends a Referral
Your referring psychiatrist, therapist, or primary care provider sends a referral to UCLA TMS via fax, email, or phone. The referral should include your diagnosis and medication history.
UCLA Obtains Pre-Authorization
Our team contacts your insurance company and submits all required documentation on your behalf. We handle the entire pre-authorization process so you do not have to.
Treatment Begins
Once authorized, treatment typically begins within 1-2 weeks. You will meet with one of our psychiatrists for an initial evaluation before starting your first session.
Insurance Requirements
Most insurance plans require documentation of prior treatment attempts before approving TMS. For depression, the exact requirements vary by plan, and our care team verifies your specific criteria and handles the authorization. Your referring provider can help ensure your relevant treatment history is included with your referral.
Self-Pay Options
When a treatment isn't covered by your insurance, self-pay options are available. Our care management team and insurance specialists will review your benefits and explain your options — speak with our clinic intake coordinators and care managers for more information.
