Andrew Leuchter, MD

Director, TMS Clinical & Research Service; Director, Division of Neuromodulation

Andrew F. Leuchter, MD, is Professor and Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Science, Director of the TMS Clinical and Research Service and the Neuromodulation Division, and Associate Director of the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA. A graduate of Stanford University, Dr. Leuchter earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He joined the UCLA faculty in 1986.

An internationally recognized expert on the treatment of mood disorders, Dr. Leuchter's research focuses on the enhancement of treatment outcomes in depression. He is leading clinical trials to improve TMS treatment outcomes and develop novel technologies for treatment of depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He uses brain-imaging techniques, such as quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to examine brain function and predict which treatments are most likely to benefit individual patients.

Dr. Leuchter is a Diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as well as the American Board of Electroencephalography and Neurophysiology. He has authored over 150 scientific articles on topics including neuromodulation for the treatment of depression, biomarkers to guide treatment of neuropsychiatric illness, and theories of antidepressant action.

David Krantz, MD, PhD

Medical Director, TMS Clinical Service

Dr. Krantz has been on the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA for twenty years, and serves active roles as both a basic scientist and a clinical psychiatrist.

After completing an MD/PhD in the Medical Scientist Training Program at UCLA, he completed internship and residency in psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is board certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. After completing residency, he was awarded a Howard Hughes Postdoctoral Fellowship for Physicians to investigate the regulation of vesicular neurotransmitter transporters in Robert Edwards' laboratory at UCSF. He returned to UCLA in 2000.

Dr. Krantz's primary clinical interest is the treatment of depression and he is a member of the Division of Neuromodulation within the Psychiatry department. He is also an attending physician in the UCLA Mood Disorders Clinic. His laboratory uses the model genetic organism Drosophila to study how neurotransmitter transporters influence synaptic transmission and behavior.

Thomas Strouse, MD

Director, Noninvasive Pain Neuromodulation Service

Dr. Tom Strouse is Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and the inaugural holder of the Maddie Katz Chair in Palliative Care Research and Education. He is also the Vice-Chair for Clinical Affairs in the David Geffen UCLA School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Strouse is the former Medical Director of Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA. He has been a faculty member at UCLA since he completed his residency training in 1991.

Early in his career, he was director of the UCLA Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry Service and worked closely with the UCLA Liver Transplant Program for over a decade. From 1994–2007, he served as Director of Cancer Pain Management and Supportive Oncology Services at the Outpatient Cancer Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he developed additional interest and skills in palliative medicine.

He has spent his career working with medically ill adults coping with psychiatric and physical aspects of catastrophic illness. Along with his current efforts to promote palliative care clinical research within the UCLA Health System, Dr. Strouse is a faculty member in the combined GLA/UCLA Palliative Medicine Fellowship, and is actively engaged with UCLA's Operation Mend, a program for wounded US servicemen and women.

Dr. Strouse is a Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, a Fellow of the Academy of Consultation/Liaison Psychiatry, and an American Psychiatric Association Distinguished Fellow. He is board certified in general psychiatry, consultation/liaison psychiatry, and hospice/palliative medicine.

He was educated at Pomona College and the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Evan Einstein, MD, MPH

Evan Hy Einstein, MD, MPH, is a Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. Before joining the UCLA faculty in 2023, he was an emergency psychiatrist at Bellevue Hospital Center in New York City. Currently, he works primarily in the Division of Neuromodulation, where he evaluates and treats patients in the UCLA TMS Clinical and Research Service. The TMS Service encompasses three clinics across the Los Angeles area, treating about 60–70 patients each day with interventions for treatment-refractory depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, chronic pain, tinnitus, and other off-label difficult-to-treat neuropsychiatric illnesses.

His interests involve developing new approaches to TMS treatment, including accelerated protocols, and he is the study psychiatrist for two invasive neuromodulation studies using implantable therapeutics such as DBS and RNS in the treatment of refractory depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, respectively.

Dr. Einstein also sees patients through his private practice at UCLA, using both psychopharmacology and psychotherapy to address a variety of symptoms and illnesses. He has developed a compassionate, warm, holistic, and straight-forward approach to mental healthcare and is committed to providing exceptional care to all patients.

Nathaniel Ginder, MD, PhD

Nathaniel Ginder, MD, PhD, is fellowship trained in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He has interests in applications of TMS for children and adolescents as well as its application in addictive behaviors.

Scott Wilke, MD, PhD

Dr. Wilke is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA and is a psychiatrist and neuroscientist. His research investigates the structure and function of neural circuits that underlie neuropsychiatric disorders.

Dr. Wilke received his BS in neurobiology from the University of Washington and went on to earn his MD and PhD in neuroscience in the Medical Scientist Training Program at UC San Diego. He completed his doctoral thesis with Dr. Anirvan Ghosh, studying activity-dependent mechanisms regulating the assembly of hippocampal circuits in the developing brain. He went on to complete a residency in adult psychiatry and to do his postdoctoral research at UC San Francisco with Dr. Vikaas Sohal. The Wilke laboratory studies the prefrontal cortex, using molecular genetic tools to observe and alter activity in the brain during behavior. Ultimately his work seeks to understand the development and resolution of depressed states at the level of specific neural circuits.

Dr. Wilke is also an active clinician with expertise in interventional approaches to treat psychiatric conditions by modulating activity in the brain. He is an attending physician in the Neuromodulation Division of the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior and specializes in transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to treat refractory depression.

Anthony Jang, MD

Anthony I. Jang, MD is an Assistant Professor-in-Residence in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and a faculty member in the Division of Neuromodulation. Dr. Jang received his MD from Harvard Medical School and completed his psychiatry residency training at UCLA, where he served as Chief Resident for the Research Track.

Dr. Jang is a board-certified psychiatrist whose clinical interests include interventional psychiatry and the treatment of mood, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders. He provides clinical care within UCLA's Neuromodulation Division, with a particular interest in leveraging emerging technologies to improve outcomes for patients with treatment-resistant psychiatric illness.

His research focuses on understanding the neural mechanisms of fear, anxiety, memory, and decision-making in humans. He combines intracranial electrophysiology, computational modeling, virtual reality, and wearable physiological monitoring to study how brain circuits support emotional and cognitive function in naturalistic environments.

In addition to his research and clinical work, Dr. Jang is committed to mentoring the next generation of physician-scientists. He serves as Associate Director of the UCLA Psychiatry Residency Research Track, where he supports resident research training and career development in academic psychiatry.

Jola received her Bachelor of Science degree from Kennesaw State University, where she majored in Exercise Physiology. She has previously worked in orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery, where she first developed an interest in the biological processes underlying mood disorders. In her free time, Jola enjoys traveling and gardening, as well as aerial silks, trapeze and lyra.

Griffin Bohman earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Statistics from California State University, Monterey Bay in 2024. During his undergraduate studies, he gained hands-on experience in several neuroscience and biological research labs. Following graduation, Griffin returned to his hometown of Los Angeles to join the TMS team at UCLA — a role that aligns closely with his passion for advancing mental health care. Outside of work, he enjoys staying active through exercise, playing chess, and reading.

Melanie earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from UCLA in 2024. She plans to go back to school for a Master’s or Doctorate degree in clinical psychology to pursue her long-term goal of being a clinical therapist to help others work through mental health issues. Outside of work, Melanie enjoys film, trying new restaurants, and collecting photos of cute animals.

Sloan received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford University. Before TMS, she worked in a clinical sleep lab, examining the effect of insomnia treatment on depressive symptoms. Doan Ngo

Research Manager

Doan attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Neuroscience. During her undergraduate years, her interests were neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. Prior to joining the Neuromodulation division, she worked as a behavioral therapist for children and adolescents with autism, as well as adults with developmental disabilities. There, she discovered her passion in helping people realize their potential. She is drawn to psychiatry, especially neuromodulation, because of her interest in neuroscience and her drive to help others cope with mental illnesses. In her free time, she enjoys being outdoors and spending time with friends and family.

Juliana Corlier, PhD

Project Scientist

Dr. Corlier is an Assistant Project Scientist at the UCLA Neuromodulation Division. She is interested in the mechanisms of action of rTMS, the effects on brain network function induced through successful treatment for Major Depressive Disorder and the development of electroencephalographic (EEG) biomarkers for clinical outcome prediction. Dr. Corlier applies advanced quantitative methods to clinical and multimodal imaging data such as machine learning, graph theory and other modern statistical approaches. Her current projects include the individualization of rTMS treatment and development of novel stimulation strategies for comorbid depression and pain.

Thomas received his Master of Arts in Applied Mathematics from UCSD and his Bachelor of Science in Applied Math from UCLA. He is passionate about helping others and hopes to use his background in mathematics and computing to improve the quality of life of those struggling with mental health. In the lab, Thomas uses data to optimize TMS treatment parameters and gain a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms that make TMS effective. In his free time, he enjoys playing golf, practicing piano, and speed solving Rubik’s Cubes.
