Accelerated TMS 5×5

Depression treatment in one week

What Is Accelerated TMS?

A typical TMS treatment course for depression consists of once-daily sessions for about 6–8 weeks. Accelerated TMS has been shown to achieve similar benefits by condensing these treatment sessions into just one week.

What Is Unique About UCLA’s 5×5?

For a more targeted approach, we use MRI images to accurately stimulate the key areas of your brain. Each accelerated session is about 9 minutes long. After your 5 days of treatment, we schedule follow-up appointments to assess your improvement over time. We will schedule additional single day treatment sessions for boosting, maintaining, or consolidating the treatment benefits.

The Experience

Personalized Care

Every patient receives personalized stimulation targeting based on their MRI imaging and individual brain anatomy. After treatment, every patient participates in the development of a custom follow-up plan based on individual symptoms and goals.

Physician Driven

Every evaluation, follow-up appointment, and TMS treatment session is conducted by an expert TMS physician, who monitors your progress each day and is available to answer any questions.

Private & Comfortable

Individual, private suites are available for each treatment day — fitted for comfort so you can relax between TMS sessions.

Who Is Accelerated TMS For?

The accelerated protocol is an excellent option for patients who:

  • Have scheduling constraints: Can’t take 6–8 weeks of daily visits due to work, school, or family obligations
  • Are traveling patients: Coming to UCLA from outside the LA area and need a compressed timeline
  • Need more urgent relief: Situations where waiting weeks for standard treatment is not ideal
  • Prefer a concentrated approach: Some patients simply prefer to complete their treatment in a shorter, more intensive window

Efficacy of 5×5 Accelerated Versus Conventional Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) for Treatment-Resistant Depression

Apostol MR, Valles TE, Corlier J, Leuchter MK, Young AS, Artin H, Koek RJ, Einstein EH, Wilke SA, Oughli HA, Strouse T, Slan A, Distler MG, DeYoung DZ, Ginder N, Krantz DE, Leuchter AF

A retrospective analysis of clinical data from the UCLA TMS Service found that the 5×5 accelerated protocol produced depression symptom improvement comparable to standard 6-week treatment. Top responders showed 69% improvement by day 5, while others showed significant benefit at follow-up — underscoring the importance of post-treatment monitoring.
